So, what makes them eco-friendly? Well, they really do go the extra mile…
The holiday village is ‘off grid’ this means that nearly all their energy comes from clean sources, such as from wind and solar. It is a holiday experience offering all the luxury modern facilities but in a sustainable way.
We recently had a chat with Séréna, the head of sustainability at Finca De Arrieta (Lanzarote Retreats), who is very passionate about being sustainable and making the world a better place. She filled us in on all that is happening her end. They have started partnering and working with more local and female-lead companies, incorporating them into the Honesty Shop, contextualising their work and recognising their amazing businesses.
Here is how busy Séréna and the team have been at Finca…
Honesty Shop
Lots of locally sourced, organic and plastic-free products are supplied in the Honesty Shop and welcome pack. Recently moved from selling plastic yogurts to glass goat milk yogurt brought from a local company in Haria and integrated almogrote, a local delicacy into the shop, The milk in the welcome pack is also now supplied by a local company based in Gran Canaria. and local juices can be found in the Honesty Shop fridge, now working with a returnable glass bottle deposit system.
Soap
Another recent changed is that all the welcome soap packages have been changed from plastic bottles and single use packaging to a local soap company called Mama Pepa. The soaps comes in a plastic free packaging, colour-tinted from plants, with a body bar made from volcanic sand from La Palma and a shampoo bar made from maca.
Coffee Capsules
The coffee capsules used at Lanzarote Retreats office, get collected by a lady called Nagore who has a local jewellery company called Rezikl Arte. Nagore upcycles the coffee capsules into jewellery. These can be found in the Honesty Shop too.
Edible Garden
They are currently in the process of creating their very own compost out of the food waste and scraps generated from guests staying in their accommodation. The compost will be used in their edible garden, which is in the making! The idea is to have an edible garden which will provide guests and staff with fresh local fruit and vegetable. Hoping to give tourists an incentive to be more conscious consumers.
Herb Garden
Accessible for all guests to cook and make herbal teas. All herbs are labelled
New bin design
This is a nudge to incentivise more people to recycle. They are upcycling old wine barrels to use as their disposal points and are creating collection point for batteries. All of the bins are labelled according to the local recycling system and old surf boards are used for signs, labelling the communal bins.
New belly boards
Boogie and belly boards have been purchased from a company called Dick Pearce and Friends who are based in the UK, wanting to transition away from plastic and Styrofoam boards into a wooden boogie board. Guests can grab a board, have a walk down as Finca is only two minutes from the sea.

Within the grounds there is a swimming pool, several play areas, communal under cover lounge and kitchen area and a zen yurt where guests can meditate, do yoga or Pilates. There is no TVs but free Wi-Fi in the communal lounge
Only 300m to the beach, lovely walk to local restaurants, with fresh fish, bars with snazzy mojito, and shops.
