5 family-friendly beaches in South Devon
Hope Cove
Near Salcombe, made up of two sandy beaches in the South Devon area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Lifeguards during the summer months, mix of sand and rocky areas meaning the Mouthwell Sands in particular is great for building sandcastles, making it a great choice for families. Dogs are welcome all year round on the larger beach, there is a day ban during the summer months on the other beach (Mouthwell).
South Milton Sands
Another beach with lifeguards during the summer months. Popular beach for families, with its golden sand and rock pools, great for the kiddies to explore. Overlooks the iconic Thurlestone Rock archway and its a great spot for stargazing. Dogs are welcome all year around.
Bantham Beach
Yet another beach designated by South Devon as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, perfect for water sports, especially surfing and building sand castles, if you are a family who like to stick to the beach. Dogs are welcome outside the summer months.
Bigbury on the Beach
Ideal for a family day on the beach with its shallow waters and dotted rock pools. Also located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has a wide range of water sports available. Lifeguards too!
Blackpool Sands
Located 3 miles from Dartmouth, this blue flag award-winning beach, backed by evergreens and pines is a popular destination for families on holidays, and yes you guessed it, it is also in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Seasonal lifeguards, supervised sandpits and water sports available.

Woolacombe
3 miles of golden sand, is this award-winning and widely recognised as one of the best beaches in the UK. Lifeguards during the summer months to ensure family and surfers safety. The beach welcomes dogs all year round with some restrictions.
Croyde Beach
One of North Devon’s most popular beaches and is known for its prettiness. To the rear are sand dunes and beyond is beautiful countryside. Families can enjoy building sand castles while surf lovers can catch some waves. Seasonal life guards on duty and dogs are welcome, but not in the summer months (1st may – 30th Sept).
Saunton Sands
3 miles of golden sand and again, a beach popular with families and surfers (mainly for beginners unlike Croyde Beach which is a bit more ‘wavy’). Saunton Sands is dog friendly all year round with no summer restrictions, making it a perfect spot for the whole family, including the fur balls, to enjoy a little beach time fun.
