Top 5 Days Out on the Isle of Wight for Families with Babies & Toddlers

There’s something extra exciting about starting your family holiday with a ferry ride – sea breeze, seagull spotting, and that sense of mini adventure before you even arrive! Once you reach the Isle of Wight, the real fun begins. From sandy beaches to animal encounters and train rides, here are five of the best days out for families with babies, toddlers and young children:

🏖️ 1. Beaches for Little Ones

The Isle of Wight is blessed with gorgeous, gentle beaches perfect for young families. Favourite picks include AppleyColwell Bay, and Shanklin – all offering shallow paddling, soft sand, and nearby facilities like cafés, toilets, and buggy-friendly access. Ideal for building sandcastles, splashing around, and seaside strolls.

🌾 2. Tapnell Farm Park (Yarmouth)

A brilliant mix of indoor and outdoor fun: soft play, jumping pillows, go-karts, sledge slides — plus friendly animals like wallabies, goats, and meerkats. Don’t miss the Isle of Wight’s only outdoor Aqua Park! On-site café means no need to pack lunch. A full day of fun, even if the weather doesn’t behave.

🌳 3. Robin Hill (Near Newport)

Set across 88 acres of woodland and gardens, Robin Hill is a countryside playground packed with toddler-friendly fun. There’s a toboggan run, jungle heights nets, a 4D cinema, falconry displays, diggers to drive, and woodland play areas. Paths are buggy-friendly, and there are shaded picnic spots and family facilities throughout.

🚂 4. Isle of Wight Steam Railway (Havenstreet)

Climb aboard a beautifully restored steam train and journey through 5+ miles of countryside—great for little explorers and big train fans alike. The stations include a play area, museum, café, and gift shop. Bikes are welcome on board, so it’s easy to mix bike trails and train adventures too.

🦕 5. Dinosaur Isle (Sandown)

A hands-on museum with real fossils, life-sized dino models, and interactive exhibits. Shaped like a giant pterosaur and located right on Sandown Bay, it’s visually stunning and educational. Garden dinosaurs, fossil-hunting panels, and even occasional “quiet hours” for sensory-sensitive kids.

🎟️ Quick Tips for Families

  • Pack a lightweight beach tent or sunshade – great for naps and nappy changes on the beach
  • Tapnell Farm Park gets busy in summer – arrive early or book tickets ahead to avoid queues
  • Dinosaur Isle sometimes runs “quiet sessions” – perfect if your little one prefers calmer environments
  • Check tide times for beaches like Appley and Colwell Bay – low tide = more sand and safer paddling
  • Bring a snack bag for the steam railway – the ride is lovely and calm, but hungry tummies wait for no one!

The Isle of Wight has so much to offer – way more than just these five days out – but we wanted to share a few of our favourites. Everything we’ve included welcomes young children and most are buggy-friendly too, making it ideal if you’re travelling with babies or toddlers.
