Do you know what Pannage season is? I didn’t, but now I do it fascinates me!
Pannage season marks the release of up to 600 pigs and piglets in New Forest. The reason the pigs are allowed to roam the open forest is to eat the fallen nuts etc from the trees such as acorns and chestnuts, some of which are poisonous the wild ponies and cattle whose usual home is the New Forest.
They are normally let loose every autumn at the end of September through to the beginning of December, the decisions is made by the New Forest Verderer and the Forestry Commission. You can see various pig breeds such as Tamworth, Gloucestershire Old Spot, the Wessex Saddleback and the British Saddleback – so many different pig breeds!
The 2021 Pannage season will run from 13th September to 14th November. An ideal time to visit the New Forest, the colours of the forest in the Autumn are spectacular.
